We aimed to create a brand identity that would stand out from the competition in Atlanta, and also attract a wide variety of customers, from the young professionals and millennials in the neighborhood, to families around the city. The branding incorporates the Belgian inspiration of the company, and a mixture of both traditional and modern elements to create a look that feels unique to Bold Monk. We designed a style of can for the Trappist-style beers which all have an ode to a Saint, and we designed a can for the non-Trappist Style beers which has some of the personality of that beer in the textured background. Together, these beers and the logo take a bold stand for this Belgian-inspired brewing co, brewed locally in Atlanta. I worked as the Creative Director of this project leading a design team to create this delicious product.
In addition to art-direction, my background is also in writing, so I wrote the copy for these cans. The goal was to be both philosophical and classic, yet modern and interesting.
Indominus Quadrupel (St. Michael)
A quiet, but universal force is the leader of our divine feathered squadron. We yearn for the protector of protectors, fighting against evil and ill-will. To greet Satan at his doorstep, and escort the less evil to heaven at their hour of death. We humbly pray for protection from the wicked and for our souls to be fortuitous in battle. Only those who feat St. Michael, shall be diminished by him.
The Way Tripel (St. Teresa)
Torn between a life of strict code and the lure of the romantic unknown, we are always searching for where we find our way amongst rules. While we may question ourselves at times, we must take control of our life and not give in to evil forces. For rules can be guidelines and covenants, or barriers and whispers. As St. Teresa guided us all, we challenge ourselves to know the way, live the way, drink the way.
Discipline Dubbel (St. Bernard)
It takes inner strength to follow, and a stronger one to lead. To create a discipline for others to follow, and to discipline oneself takes more power than we shall know. We must desire to be self aware and self sustaining. To have control and be a part of a higher power fueled by kindness, humility and magnanimity. For then, like St. Bernard, we can all know our reputation and predestination.
Shared Spirit IPA
It’s one thing to go along with the crowd, it’s another to go your own way. There is importance in both, as we all share the spirit within, but it is the weight of these forces that fuel our desires. All around us, there exists a deep reservoir of love, goodwill, and guidance. We must follow the words of the spirits around us and the spirits within, to share our love, share our voice, and share the spirit.
Brother Ivan Russian Imperial Stout
Na Zdorovie, Brother Ivan, and look within. It has been said that there is not a mystery in staying alive, but a mystery in finding life’s purpose. Thou spirit above has named you as his endowment. And thus you must be handed over to the depths of your sorrow until you reach your own Signal de Botrange. Find your reserves of kindness and compassion and dust them of. Start living large and find your meaning.
